Weightlifting shoes were designed a long time ago when weightlifters used a certain technique known as the spilt. This technique required the weightlifter to place one foot forward and the other slightly backward; bending the knees and ankles to a great extent, while keeping the front foot flat on the floor. Later on power lifters came up with another technique which required greater bending and it helped the lifter to go lower in order to lift with greater ease. This was called the squat. The squat was done by simply shifting both the feet to the sides and bending the knees and ankles even more than what had to be done in the split. In this technique, both the feet were supposed to be kept flat on the floor in order to prevent damage as well as increase stability.
But the problem was that while bending so much it was impossible to keep both the feet completely flat on the floor. When bending so low, with both the feet a distance apart, the lifter tends to slightly lift the heel of the foot, lifting the heavy weights only on the ball and toes. This affected performance to a great extent and also caused major injuries to the feet and legs.
At this time, shoe manufacturers developed a shoe that featured a raised heel as well as a hard sole. The raised heel filled up the gap between the heel and the floor, allowing for great stability and performance enhancement. The idea of a solid sole was to keep the force produced by the lifter to be entirely used to lift the weight. The problem with soft soles was that the force produced would be dissipated towards the floor and the lifter would lose out a lot.
As you can see, weightlifting can be greatly affected if the proper shoe is not used to do the task.
